It is a
series of numbers usually separated by full stops between used to identify
individual computers or other mobile devices that use the internet protocol
(IP) to communicate with a network. It can also be described as a numerical
label that is assigned to any device that connects to a network that uses
internet protocol for communicating with anything on the internet. There are 2
types of IP addresses that are in use today. The protocols followed are the
IPv4 and IPv6, they follow different notations to represent the device
connected to the network. The IP address is usually defined as a 32-bit number according to IPv4. Due to its
depletion in the early '90s, the other
version namely, IPv6 was released that defined the IP address as a 128-bit number. The IP is displayed as a
combination of alphanumeric with full stops or colon in between in case of IPv4
and IPv6 respectively, for example,
192.168.154.5 in IPv4 and 2001:db7:8:1:123:0:756:1:1 in IPv6.
