The three basic needs of man are food, clothing and shelter. They are basic in the sense they are bare necessities needed by man for survival. All these basic needs have been impacted by man’s activities to be more than just bare necessities. In shelter, man is known to have progressed tremendously. Shelter is a place where people live and are protected from danger, weather elements etc. From staying in caves to building of skyscrapers, man has generally transformed this bare necessity into a luxurious and comfortable one. The use of technology has afforded man the opportunity to build remarkable structures in no time. These structures do not only serve a basic necessity demand but are also used as a means of artistic expression. Through the use of novel materials such as Building Wraps and other accessories, different designs in building have been made possible
Materials that are still used in buildings include brick, tile, glass and concretes. Brick has been so known to man since early times. They are even mentioned in the biblical account of the Israelite bondage in Egypt. They are usually made from dried clay with earth or mud. They were originally air dried using the sun. On molding them, they are left in the open until they are strong enough for use. From sun drying, man was able to invent ceramics or fired bricks. Fired bricks involve the use of high temperature in artificial environments to give it strong and resistant properties.
