Popular among
the Hindu and South-Indian tradition is the goddess known as Lakshmi. She is
considered as the goddess of wealth, fertility and prosperity. There are some
reasons why people may want to associate her divine person with love. This is
because of her undying affection and eternal betrothal to the god, Vishnu.
Vishnu, the
preservation god is charged with the divine duty of reincarnation, in what case
he comes, again and again, to save the world from destruction. In all of these
times of reincarnation, Lakshmi reincarnates with him as well, falls in love
with him, and marries him again and again. However, she is attributed to
prosperity and wealth above everything else. Looking at the Lakshmi wealth
drawing, there are some things that you get to take note of.
First of all, she
is found on an ocean. One of the names you might find out this goddess is
called is the daughter of the Ocean of milk. There is hardly ever any tradition
out there that does not attribute an ocean of milk with overflowing prosperity.
This is just the same as the goddess. More so, on the ocean, she is seen to be
seated in a floating lotus. Lotus stands for self-realization and this is one
of the things the goddess is identifiable for, amidst all, as a path towards
prosperity. The goddess’ four arms are also symbolic. They represent the four
paths or goals of human life considered under the Hindu tradition.
