What exactly is frankincense, anyway?

Frankincense is an essential oil steam distilled from Boswellia plants, a species of trees that grow throughout the Middle East, Africa, and in other areas of this part of the world.

These trees are unique in that they can grow to incredible heights in very little soil, as well as in some of the harshest and more desolate climates that other plants simply cannot exist in.

Frankincense has been used throughout history in spiritual and religious rituals, with the name roughly translating in French to “quality incense”. The Christian religion, in particular, places a very high value on frankincense.
