Among most known artists in Zanzibar is Edward Said Tingatinga. His paintings depict scenes with African animals, maliny leopards, giraffes, elephants, gazelle and African birds. They are often bought as a souvenir from Zanzibar. What is characteristic about Tingatinga’s paintings is that animal bodies are presented on canvas in profile but their faces are depicted in frontal position. What is more, Tingatinga used a lot of dots and spots. His paintings lack perspective. Since he was poor, he couldn’t afford to purchase art supplies. He painted on scavenged materials, discarded ceiling boards using dregs of bicycle enamel, household paint and old paintbrushes.
