First Aid Kit is something of great
importance. It holds supplies required to provide medical treatment urgently.
According to the International Organization for Standardization (or ISO), the
symbol for a medical kit is
a white cross across the green background. An alternative sign is a green cross
across the white background. This is an international symbol which makes it
easy for everyone to recognize it easily, in time of need.
A medical
kit is of different types, some include common items to treat minor
injuries, some include medications of a specific disease, etc. It is important
to keep at least the basic items on hand when you leave the house and even when
at home. Following is a detailed list of contents found in a First Aid Kit:
- Common items- The most
common items in a kit includes antiseptic wipes, bandages, cotton balls,
emergency blanket, gauze, gloves, hand sanitizer, saline, tissues, and a
leaflet for guidance.
- ABC items- These items
treat airway, breathing, and circulation systems and thus are important
too. These include pocket mask, face shield (for your protection), manual
aspirator, sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, etc.
- Trauma injuries- They
include sterile dressings, butterfly closure strips, soap, burn dressings,
hypoallergenic, etc.
- PPE- This equipment is
of a personal protective nature and commonly includes gloves, goggles,
surgical masks, and apron. During the pandemic, they now include face
shields and N95 masks too. These are very important items, especially when
in contact with COVID-19 patients.
- Other equipment- Apart
from the common items, a medical
kit may also include scissors, lighter, alcohol pads, syringe,
torch, thermometer, space blanket, penlight, and safety pins.
- Medicine- When
assembling a personal kit or a car first aid kit (that you or your family might require)
then you may add medication too. It is essential to add medication you or
anyone in your family may urgently need. Mostly they include aspirin,
epinephrine (or an EpiPen), painkillers (paracetamol, NSAIDs),
anti-diarrheal medication, ORS, antihistamine (anti-allergen), etc. Make
sure to add other disease-specific medication for diabetes, blood
pressure, etc. if any of your family has NCD.
You can always buy a ready-made First Aid Kit to keep on hand or can
also assemble one with the essential contents from the list above. You never
know when you might need one, or maybe somebody near you might need it. It is a
life-saving kit and people nowadays do not understand the importance of it.
Yes, you can always rush to a hospital or a nearby clinic in time of medical
assistance, but a medical
kit will help you keep afloat during the journey to the hospital.
So do not underestimate the importance of it. Be prepared and stay safe.
