Mr.B continuously encourages us in his writings to think about the
economics of it if we want to really understand it. “Long ago a politician was said to have
remarked, “I don’t care what they say about me, as long as they spell my name
right.” In other words, the politician
wanted name identification above all else.
With social media, the more there is controversy, the more there is
usage, and usage is the driver of advertising revenue.” wrote Bernhard in an
article on his personal website.
One hundred years ago we had what was called “yellow journalism”;
many newspapers were a kind of “National Enquirer” with provocative and
misleading headlines and stories of dubious accuracy, full of uncorroborated
information, rumors, and innuendo. But
they attracted readers who were easily excitable and bought the newspapers.
“And to distribute more fake news easier, more fake news accounts
got incorporated to multiply the amount of fake news and with that, of course,
the amount of fake news equals more advertising income for the social media
giants,” explained Bernhard.
After reading some of the questions that Mr.B had put forth, it is
easy to realize how powerless we are in the face of these massive campaigns
that are far-reaching and well funded. Even easier is to opt out and block news
altogether if you wish.
