A healthy body contributes to a healthy mind. Health beliefs
differ across cultures but the essence of most of these beliefs stresses on
balance and harmony. Just as ancient Chinese medicine believes in balance
between the elements, ayurvedic medicine also believes the same. Native
American and African medicine also emphasized the harmony between humans and
their environment as a central aspect of health. In the modern biomedical
concept of health, balance is also a key priority. However, the nature of this
balance is different. This balance is between the key sources of nutrition such
as carbs, fats, proteins and vitamins and taking in an appropriate amount of
water and electrolytes. As we already know that, our brain essentially runs on
electricity, electrolytes are the important sources from where the brain gets
its key electrolytes. These include sodium and potassium, which aid neurons in
transmitting impulses and control muscle function.
Since, the concept of balance is key here, it is important
that the body have an appropriate amount of electrolytes at all times. Without
electrolytes, many different symptoms appear such as nausea, vomiting,
twitching etc. It is extremely dangerous to be deprived of electrolytes as well
as they are the basis of neuronal activity and help the brain regulate all its
functions. Electrolytes are also important in regulating the heartbeat as they
can control the rate of your heartbeat. If the electrolyte levels in your body
are either too low or too high, it can affect the circulation of blood thought
your body and even go as far as to cause cardiac failure.
